September 11, 2001 began as a pristine day in the Northeast, not a cloud in the sky over New York City and Washington. For millions of people in the financial and political hubs of America and the world, it was just another day in a still unnamed decade. As the hands on the decorative clocks along Fifth Avenue approached 8:40, few realized that in an instant the new chapter so many believed would be filled with hope and promise would be replaced with an updated version of some of the darkness left behind in the 20th century. |
8:46 a.m. - American Airlines Flight 11 hits World Trade Center 1 (the North Tower). 9:03 a.m. - United Airlines Flight 175 hits World Trade Center 2 (the South Tower). |
